Background of the study
Community acceptance of modern contraception methods is crucial for effective family planning and reproductive health management. In Esan North East, socio-cultural values, religious beliefs, and traditional norms significantly influence the acceptance and utilization of modern contraceptive methods (Omoregbe, 2023). Despite the availability of modern contraceptives, misconceptions and cultural resistance often lead to low uptake and adherence (Ighodaro, 2024). This study investigates the extent of community acceptance, exploring factors that encourage or deter the adoption of modern contraception. It also examines the role of educational programs, healthcare providers, and community leaders in influencing public perceptions. By evaluating these dynamics, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how modern contraception is integrated into traditional contexts and to propose strategies to enhance its acceptance (Esegbeyin, 2025).

Statement of the problem
In Esan North East, resistance to modern contraception methods remains high due to cultural and religious misconceptions. This resistance results in lower contraceptive prevalence rates and contributes to unplanned pregnancies and adverse reproductive health outcomes (Omoregbe, 2023; Esegbeyin, 2025). The lack of effective communication between healthcare providers and the community exacerbates these challenges. This study addresses the critical need to assess community acceptance and to identify barriers hindering the adoption of modern contraceptives, aiming to inform interventions that promote informed reproductive health choices.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the level of community acceptance of modern contraception.
  2. To identify socio-cultural and religious barriers affecting contraceptive use.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the adoption of modern contraception.

Research questions:

  1. What is the current level of acceptance of modern contraception in Esan North East?
  2. Which cultural and religious factors influence contraceptive use?
  3. How can communication between healthcare providers and the community be improved?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Cultural misconceptions significantly reduce acceptance of modern contraception.
  2. Religious beliefs are a major barrier to contraceptive use.
  3. Targeted educational interventions can enhance community acceptance of modern contraception.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the socio-cultural dynamics influencing modern contraception acceptance. The findings will inform targeted interventions and policies to improve reproductive health outcomes and family planning services in Esan North East (Ighodaro, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating community acceptance of modern contraception methods within Esan North East Local Government, focusing exclusively on socio-cultural and religious influences.

Definitions of terms:

  • Modern Contraception: Contemporary methods used to prevent pregnancy, including hormonal and barrier methods.
  • Community Acceptance: The degree to which a community approves and adopts a practice or intervention.
  • Reproductive Health: The state of physical, mental, and social well-being in relation to the reproductive system.
